Fred Baker (right) and son, Marc, scored a memorable victory in a recent club men’s pairs competition at Dawlish & District indoor Bowls Club.
They won 83-1, smashing the previous highest margin of victory by almost 30 shots! Commented Fred: “It was one of those occasions, where everything clicked. To achieve this with my son, Marc, made it just that bit special”!
Meanwhile, Peter Hayes, Publicity Officer, reports: ” in the first of the men’s season’s Inter Club 4s competition, Dawlish achieved a win over Exonia Bowling Club. Once again, Fred played a key role skipping his team to a 40-6 victory. Although Graham Shute’s team went down valiantly 14-19 , skips Dave Nown and Barry Crugten won their team’s away matches 24-11 and 21-20 respectively, resulting in an overall win for Dawlish by 99-56. An excellent start to the season”!
“Tasting Success”!
On Saturday 17th September Dawlish and District Indoor Bowling Association had its Annual Open ‘Taster Day’. The response from the local community was very encouraging.
Peter Hayes, Publicity Officer for the club comments: “Sue Worthington, a very experienced member of the coaching staff, put in a lot of effort to plan the day and to further ensure the running of the event. This year we had 28 attend from absolute beginners to experienced bowlers from local outdoor Clubs to try the sport of Indoor bowling. It’s an exacting sport, which requires skill, ability and accuracy and involves mathematics and physics, which come with practice.
Sue continues: “All the bowls disciplines from short mat through Indoor, crown and flat green require precision and accuracy and variables. Variables outside are easy to see and understand; weather and heaviness of the green are just a couple. Indoor variables are heat, temperature of the carpet, humidity and so on.
“On Saturday we had 28 come through the door to try it out. Of those 28, 14 joined as new members, 5 joined for our coaching sessions prior to making the final decision on joining the club, 6 have gone away to consider joining our coaching sessions over the next week or so and 3 thought it wasn’t for them.

Sue concluded: “All in all a great day and a fabulous time was had by all. Our President, Iris Joyce, and members of The General Committee along with the coaching team and helpers played their part on the day. They were ably assisted by one of our successful junior members, Andrew Moore. Andrew is 16 years of age and is already a member of the Devon Colts team. He is currently considering Level 1 coaching organised by Bowls England.
“Alongside our Taster Days we also run our Youth Academy for those of a younger age, usually 8 years old upwards, as part of the local After School Clubs on Tuesday afternoons from 3.30pm. Any newcomers are always welcome; just pop along and try us out. All equipment is provided”.
