Dawlish Indoor Bowls Club this season hosted the Whitehead Trophy, the Area Inter-Club Tournament. Ten teams participated from this part of Devon and on a dramatic final day, Dawlish Marina ‘A’ secured victory, in no small part owing to the Abbrook Park ‘B’ team’s victory over Abbrook Park ‘A’! Dawlish Marina ‘A’ had already won their final game on the same day. This meant that both teams had won the same number of games. However, because of their superior shots difference, Dawlish Marina ‘A’ won overall by a margin of 57 shots.

Dawlish team members were Fred Baker (pictured) – the ‘A’ team Captain, along with Marc Baker, Ray Buckley, George Monk, Tina Rowe, Gerri Smith and Colin Parker.

Commented Peter Hayes, Publicity Officer: “It was a hard fought competition throughout the season. Our teams won 8 out of 9 matches and were the model of consistency, building an important shots difference throughout the season. We never imagined that an opponent’s ’B’ victory over their ‘A’ squad would be the clincher! That’s what makes the game of bowls so fascinating”.
